From Tanjong Rhu, old Mrs Li doesn’t want anything that her son gives her, before her death, binoculars for her cataracts which he had wished to let her use. “Ah-Ma, I bought you---today---one thing for you.” “Ah-Wah things you can buy I do not need.” “ I know I have everything that I need.” From here, Mrs Li know that she cannot see well but choose not to use the binoculars unless they can see Tanjong Rhu. [pg 30] She is old, but does not want anything except to think about her past. Her son is rich in his business, so I don’t think she can’t get anything she wants. Old Mrs Li is very traditional, at her age she is still dutifully praying to her late husband at the alter, telling him things that are happening. When she is contended she is also happy, so she doesn’t believe in materialistic gains. [pg 35 -38]
